The Proving of Medicines in Homeopathy
Since Hahnemann generations of homeopaths have "tested" countless medicines, i.e. experienced their effectiveness on themselves. Today's knowledge about the action of different medicines comes mainly from their carefully documented experiences and partly from the area of toxicology - reports of the effects of poisonings e.g. after the ingestion of belladonna.
When testing medicines homeopathic physicians become similar to those seeking help and the ill through the medicine testing. Experiencing the illness themselves enables homeopaths to meet the complaint on an equal level.
Example of the Proving of a Medicine:
A group of about 10 to 15 homeopaths take a medicine, whose identity is chosen by and only known by the person conducting the test, for so long until the participants develop clear symptoms. Daily records are kept from Day 1. A supervisor who also keeps a record tends to two testees. The testee and supervisor continue to keep daily records until no new symptoms appear.
At this point the records are compared and a preliminary view of the tested medicine is formed. All recorded changes are compared and the group exchanges their experiences of taking the medicine.
The symptoms are summarised and a preliminary image of the medicine is formed. The entire process of a test from start to publication can take up to 2 years.
